Apron Love

Hello everyone~ Do you like aprons? Do you use an apron? I do  and believe it or not, my hubby likes me in an apron. Not sure why! lol!

I wanted to share my new apron which I received from a friend.

She knows my love for birdhouses and this apron has Spring written all over it! It is a bright robin egg blue; one of my favourite colours! Covered in birdhouses and Spring flowers, it is so fun to wear.

You may have read this poem before but my uncle had sent me this tidbit quite a while ago and I thought I would share it today along with my new apron...

NOTE: This poem Grandma's Apron is often listed as 'Author Unknown' but the original version was written by Tina Trivett in memory of her grandmother.
This is the original poem should you wish to check it out -  http://withagratefulheart.blogspot.com/2007/07/grandmas-apron.html

Grandma's Apron ....wrapped so sweetly around our hearts.

*The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath. Because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

*It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

*From the chicken coop the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven.

*When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids.

*And when the weather was cold, Grandma wrapped it around her arms.

*Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove..

*Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron.

*From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.

*After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.

*In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.
*When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.
*When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner.
*It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

This picture really brings back memories of my own grandmother! She was such a busy lady, cooking, cleaning, and helping my grandfather run the farm. Her pantry always had jars filled with her home made cookies. The only time I remember her not wearing an apron was when she went to church or to town!
REMEMBER:
Grandma used to set her hot pies on the window sill to cool.
Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw.
They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.
I never caught anything from an apron....But Love. {Author Unknowwn}

  1. Hello Sandi...oh, I love old aprons and all that goes with them. Just a delightful post. I found a crocheted children's apron a few weeks ago at an Estate Sale. The lady had won a ribbon for it at a fair, so I have the ribbon too. Who could let that go? Shame on the family members.
I have aprons but don't always wear them...I think I should.
    Love, Linda

  2. Hi Sandi,
a sweet and touching post. I never had a Grandmother around me but probably she used an apron like every woman at this time. I can imagine why your hubby loves you in an apron. It looks so comfortable and has a unspoken promise for a good meal or cake. This apron from your friend is too cute. Must be fun to work with such a nice one.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  5. Sandi! I love aprons. In fact I wear one pretty much from the time I get up to the time I got to bed while working.

I have bunches and bunches and a small collection of awesome vintage ones.

Last y ear our local civic women's group had a speaker program of a gal with a lifetime of aprons to show, and a nice presentation on the history of them. It was awesome!

The year before that a DIFFERENT lady did a tremendous job with a similar show at The Kelton House Afternoon Tea (I posted about KH for that Valentine's tea you may recall.)

Neat post. Love aprons. Great idea to blog about them.

  10. Such a sweet post, it touches my heart.

Your apron is lovely. I have to remind myself to wear an apron and I always enjoy it when I do. I've sewn a few of them out of favorite fabrics hence I also enjoy making them. I just need to reach for them more often...Thanks for the gentle reminder.

    Blessings,

    Vee

This post in some way touched my heart, perhaps because it reminds me of my grandma , she is 84 and wears aprons every single day except on special occasions. She used to sew them ( Gos bless her) I love aprons and yours is so cheerful and pretty .

  17. I love vintage aprons. I have a small collection of them, including some really cute childrens' ones. But my very favorite is a pink flowered one trimmed in white eyelet and blue rick rack that my mother made for her mother when whe was in high school Home Ec. My mother is now 85, so it's very special.

I generally wear aprons when I am cooking and baking for company,so am wearing my nice clothes. I also gather eggs in my apron, those apron pockets are perfect for a clutch of eggs, carrying apples in from the orchard...

  22. Hello Sandi
I have always worn a full apron and have several favourites. My friends are used to seeing me in one when we entertain but I do remove it for dinner. :-)
My grandmother always wore one too and it's true how versatile they are. I'm lost if mine doesn't have a pocket on it somewhere.
Your new apron is really nice.

  24. I sent that poem along with an apron as a gift. I love it and it makes me think of my grandmothers who would never cook a meal without one on. Holidays they would have special ones and they always were the perfect gift for them. I have several and should most definitely wear one All of the time since there is always a swipe of dinner somewhere on my pants. I never saw the "Remember" one before and got a good laugh out of the second to last line and a warm feeling with the last line.
I Love your princess phone too! Another great memory.

  25. My grandmother was born in 1875. She died when I was about 13. I remember her quite well.
She always wore a great big "working apron" in the morning to do her baking and cleaning. At lunch she removed it. Afternoons she put on a light fancy apron for tea. Then no apron at dinner and for the evening. I remember she always had a big crock of sugar cookies when we visited.
