Spiritual Sundays

The weekend is here once again and with the weekend comes Spiritual Sundays hosted by Charlotte and Ginger. Thank you ladies for bringing this event our way every week! Please click on the link to visit all the participants at SS this week. http://bloggerspirit.blogspot.com/

I don't know about you, but I have been bothered by the language coming out of some people's mouths; especially Christian people's mouths! Is it just me or are there others out there in blogland that are offended by foul talk?

The other day I came across this devotion and I am happy I did because sometimes I think perhaps it's just me!

This was penned by Dave Branon and I agree with him one hundred percent.

WORDS - DO THEY MATTER?

I heard a teenager from a Christian home declare, "My mom doesn't think swear words are bad." He then indicated which words she found acceptable - words that have long been considered inappropriate.

Society's standard of language has declined in recent years, but we don't have to decline with it. As we strive to be "very careful...how {we} live" {Eph. 5:15}, we should think about how to honour God with our words.

We please the Lord with our tongue when we show discernment. "He who restrains his lips is wise," Proverbs 10:19 reminds us. When we do speak, we are to filter the words that escape our lips: "Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles" {21:32}.

It is important to use kind, positive words - even to address tough subjects. "A harsh word stirs up anger," but "the tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly" {Proverbs 15:1-2}.

Finally, avoid words that reflect poorly on who we are as God's children. Paul's admonition to "let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth" {Eph. 4:29} sets a strong standard for the righteous use of words.

To honour God in each part of life, use words that are pleasing and acceptable to a holy God.

The tongue can be a blessing
And the tongue can be a curse;
Say, friend, how are you using yours:
For better or for worse? - Anon.

WHAT WE SAY REVEALS WHO WE ARE

Please pray for our sister Debbie @ The Way We Are http://debsdailydribble.blogspot.com/
as she just received the news this week that she has breast cancer. Her prayer button is also on my sidebar.

I think we seem to have a theme of "being positive" in our SS posts this weekend!

  2. This is so good! This bothers me as well. What upsets me are the songs that they sing with these words. I had to roll my window up the other day because I didn't want my granddaughter to hear this horrible words.Your scriptures are truly perfect!

  6. I just couldn't agree more. It is soo sad the depths to which society has shrunk in that many are not even bothered by these words anymore. Our tongues can do soo much damage, and we need to watch them. Thanks for this reminder.

I soo appreciate your prayers Sandi, and I would feel very honored to have me listed for prayer on your blog.

James 5:16 ... and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

    I love your "pink" things btw...soo pretty...Have a wonderful week-end.

    HUGS, Debbie

  9. I so agree with you, Sandi. I am appalled at the language that is acceptable in our society today. It is bad enough when non-Christians talk this way, but it really breaks my heart when I hear it from Christians.
    Thank you for posting.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte

  14. I totally agree - I know God hurts when we use nasty words..and it diminishes us as a person. I try not to always preach that I am a christian - but to live my life so others can see and to know that I am. I could not live a day with out my dear and precious Lord at my side and in my heart. He makes life worth living.......Pauline

  15. Hello, I agree, words do matter.
Jesus was "The Word of God that became incarnate. What power!

Hearing the wrong words can bring damage, death, destruction, harm, and much hurt.
Bless you for drawing attention to this. Hugs from Oz sister.

  17. If Christians have assimilated with the world so much that it's hard to tell who is who, I think that's really sad. Thank you for this

  20. Hi Sandi, our words are so important to us and those who are listening. We are what we speak, so we need to speak in a gentle manner with love and respect no matter what. Great scripture to share today.

  22. Hi Sandi!

Oh yes, the language that is so "acceptable" these days is a shame and such a bad reflection of us all as a society!

I grew up in a family that NEVER swore. To this day I have never heard either of my parents swear.

Raising a 2 year old who mimics everything she hears, we are ultra careful of our words. Not just swear or foul words but, negative words in general. We don't use words like "hate" or "stupid" in this house. I figure she will get enough negativity from the outside world, she does NOT need it in her home!

    Have a wonderful day!
