Red and White for A Big Birthday

...God keep our land glorious and free!

Hello everyone and Happy Canada Day to all my Canadian friends! Tomorrow, July 1, is Canada's 151st birthday and so today I am sharing red and white, the colours of our flag.

I have some strawberry-banana trifle complete with Canadian flags. The miniature flags were a gift from a blogger friend.

Strawberry Banana Trifle

1 container strawberries, sliced

4 bananas, sliced
1 large pkg Vanilla instant pudding
2-1/2 cups milk
1 can Eagle Brand Milk
1 angel food cake- cut up
1 large container Cool whip

Prepare pudding with milk and Eagle Brand Milk. When pudding starts to thicken, add 1/2 the container of Cool Whip.

Layer half the cake cubes, half the pudding, half the bananas, and half the berries. Repeat the layers and top with Cool Whip. Garnish with extra berries. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

If you prefer cake, there is a buttercream frosted cake also adorned with miniature Canadian flags.

I have chicken salad on whole wheat and egg salad on white tea sandwiches to enjoy. I make the chicken salad two ways. For sandwiches, I shred the chicken and for a chunkier salad which I would use in croissants, I cube the chicken.

My china is a mix of red and white, the colours of our flag -

Summer has finally arrived bringing with it warm weather. It has been a very cold June and would have gone down as the coldest on record on PEI if not for the past few warm days we have had.

A friend took this shot in North Rustico which is not far from Cavendish, PEI.

Hubby and I went for an early stroll through Peakes Quay this morning and it was just so beautiful down there with hardly anyone around. We enjoyed some Cow's ice cream at 10:30 in the morning. Yes, I know! That's rather early for ice cream but it was fun.

While we were enjoying our ice cream, a young fellow with his family stopped in front of us and the young lad climbed up on the Cow's back. He reminded me so much of our grandson that we asked if we could take his picture.

That is something our grandson would have done. The young lad loved it!

These are my grandsons last summer at Cow's when their uncles treated them to ice cream.

My intention was to go down early to Peakes Quay and try to get a PEI dirt cap for my son who is coming from Vancouver in July. He's been trying every summer when he comes to get one and they are always sold out.
These caps are washed in our PEI red dirt which gives the cap its unique colour. I was so happy to finally get one and he's going to be very pleased!

Canada, for those of you who are not aware, belongs to the British Commonwealth so many of our holidays we share with Britain. Our province of Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada and as many of you know, we are famous for Anne of Green Gables. Many say we are much like Ireland in landscape. PEI is also the birthplace of Canada and is called the Cradle of Confederation.

I know that my American family and friends are also celebrating Independence Day this upcoming week so I want to wish you all a Happy 4th of July
Have a safe holiday everyone and God bless our country Canada and God bless America!

  1. Beautiful! Thank you for sharing your pictures.

  2. Happy Canada Day. You have made me so hungry with all the goodies you made. One day I would like to visit your beautiful country. Hubby told me to put it on the list. We have a list of places we want to visit when he retires in a couple of years.

  3. I love the tablecloth that you put with the red cups !!!
Can you tell me what that kind of lace is called?

    1. Hi Ana! Thank you for your visit. I'm sorry but I have no idea what the lace is called. The table cloth was gifted to me years ago by a friend and all I know is that it is vintage. Have a beautiful day!

  4. Dear Sandi:
This does look like a wonderful celebration and lovely transferware is perfect. Your trifle looks delicious and those sandwiches - let's "dig in"! Your lace tablecloth looks like Quaker lace from here! Very pretty. Hope you have a lovely week on your beautiful island. I look at the weather link and your temps are amazing. Everyday in Missouri means in the 90's. We have a true hot summer where as your temps are springlike all summer.

  5. Your shores are wonderful! And what a lovely celebration you have prepared! Glad it has warmed a bit for you. Happy holiday!

  6. Happy Canada Day, Sandi!!! Everything looks just so lovely and pretty. The food looks scrumptious, too. Have a wonderful Sunday! xo Diana

  7. Stunning tea set!Love your gorgeous table in red!!!Happy Canada Day!Hugs!

  8. Oh how I loved catching up with you after being gone visiting with my dear Mom. Happy Belated Canada Day, Sandi! I love your pretty red dishes, and seeing your tiered tray and your yummy desserts. Won't your grandson be happy with his dirt cap?!
Your hodge podge post was a fun one to read and to see pics. I'm sure your sweetie loved his cinnamon rolls. I love that you make them in muffin tins, and yes, I loved one with my cup of tea. Love and God bless you, Sandi!

  9. Your beautiful red and white tea setting is perfect for celebrating our country's 151st birthday! I'd love to join you for a cup of tea and some trifle and cake.

We're experiencing an "extreme heat event" so I spent most of the long weekend indoors. Last Saturday, I attended a family BBQ and we drank some raspberry cordial that my aunt got when she visited PEI. The beverage tasted like cream soda...

I would have enjoyed some ice cream at 10:30 am too! I think there's a Cow's at Niagara-on-the-Lake. Enjoy the first week of July!

    1. P.S. I just visited the Cows website and they sell green tea ice cream!!!

  10. Happy Canada day. Strawberry and banana trifle, perfect combination. The large cow is cute

  11. Happy belated Canada Day Sandi! Your tea looks just delicious. I love that Felicity Red teacup and those cute little Canadian flags. And how interesting about the PEI Dirt cap! What a unique idea. I'm glad you were able to find one. xo Deborah

  12. Happy Canada Day to you (belated). Someone actually mentioned this in church yesterday when we were singing our patriotic songs. So you were thought of here in the USA as well. Loved your red and white roses and table settings...all so perky and bright. Thank you for sharing with us. May God bless Canada, and God bless America too!!!

  13. Hi Sandi and Happy Canada Day! LOVE all the wonderful red and white. And it is always a joy to see more of PEI. The linky is a beta test phase, and I think it has some bugs....sorry you had problems linking...think I'll go back to the old one for next week. Enjoy your week!

  14. Delightful desserts, and lovely china! What good be better?

  15. Happy Canada Day, Sandy! My husband and I were wondering the details about Canada's holiday this morning on our walk.

Your food all looks delicious and I love the transferware!

  16. Beautiful post and lovely table! I am definitely trying the trifle soon!

  17. Sandi, of course tea sandwiches aren't quite as glamorous as your lovely trifle and cake, but I always go for the sandwiches over the sweets! What a beautiful table!

  18. Happy Birthday Canada! Everything looks lovely! Thanks for sharing at Home Sweet Home!
