Tea and Cakes in Narnia

You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me. ~ CS Lewis

Hello my lovely friends and welcome to Narnia! OK, let's pretend it's Narnia. What do you do when inspiration strikes you? You run with it which is how I came up with this post today.

Driving through the Park the other day I spied this lampost and it reminded me of Narnia. Narnia is a fantasy world created by CS Lewis. In Narnia some animals can talk, mythical beasts abound, and magic is common. It is a wonderful story written to entertain young and not so young minds, where good triumphs over evil.

A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest. ~ CS Lewis

My children and I all read the Chronicles of Narnia and enjoyed them immensely. The Disney movie, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe was especially fun.

Here on the Island, it is wintertime and it appears to be much like Narnia. At least that is how it appears to me at the moment. After three snow storms with two blizzards in a row, our little island is blanketed in mountains of snow. It is knee deep in our back yard where the bird feeder is.

Now let's pretend that my cabinet is a wardrobe.

My wardrobe is in the "spare oom" which serves as our den and a bedroom when the kids are home. Now, let's open the doors and the scene that meets the eye is somewhat pretty if you like that white stuff. I prefer green leafy trees and posies myself but that will come in time. The Island does however offer some magic. We are a small island where in any season, one can find a little magic if one only opens their eyes to see it. Our Anne of Green Gables is proof of that.

This is a path at the end of our street which runs behind our home. Folks like to take walks back there and in the winter, they take their ski-doos.

The lampost at Victoria Park reminds me of the scene where Lucy stepped out of the wardrobe and into Narnia's winter wonderland. She then had a chance meeting with the faun, Mr. Tumnus, who straightaway invited her to tea.

Mr. Tumnus offered his young guest "tea and cakes" but I don't have cakes today. I have these decadent sweets which were brought to our Valentine's Day supper at our Bible study.... chocolate covered strawberries, shortbread, slivers of chocolate pie and raspberry cream pie. These were just the desserts. It was a veritable feast to be sure and I'm certain young Lucy would have enjoyed them herself.

Mr. Tumnus didn't offer his young guest tea in fancy china but my hubby had gifted me with these RA Petit Point pieces for Valentine's Day a few years ago and I opted to use them for our tea today.

Would you like to have an adventure now or shall we have our tea first? - Peter Pan ~ JM Barrie

I have never done cross work or quilting but I can certainly appreciate the time and effort the ladies put into it. This china pattern is so reminiscent of cross work. The teacup is very dainty, crafted in the Hampton shape. I love the square plates with their scalloped corners too. I remember opening up the package when Hubby gave them to me and I was enchanted! I had never seen the pattern before.

So, let us sip our tea and enjoy a sweet or two. I am having the raspberry cream pie and one of the chocolate dipped strawberries. Please help yourself.

Mmm, a cup of hot tea is lovely anytime but especially in the wintertime when Jack Frost is nipping at your nose.

So, tell me, have you ever read The Chronicles of Narnia or seen the movies? If you have a good imagination then I know you enjoyed them. I like to think there is an inner child in each of us and sometimes it is great fun to explore a new world and meet different characters by getting lost in a book. The Chronicles series and The Secret Garden are just a few of the books that take one on a special little journey.

I can't imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once. ~ CS Lewis

I can agree with that statement. I have read books many times if I enjoy them. I always learn something the second time around.

I hope you enjoyed my whimsical post today. Once in a while I like to let my hair down so to speak and have fun with a post. Enjoy your day and thanks so much for visiting.

  2. That was delightful, Sandi! I haven't 'been' to Narnia in quite some time.
I love your Petit Point. My very dearest and longest friend has her mother's Petit Point and I look for pieces to add to her collection. These days I am hunting for mugs - perfect for hot chocolate on a cold winter day. Coincidentally, her family is from Tignish - another Island Girl!

  3. Oh your tea is absolutely charming, Sandi. Your post is so happy and sweet!

I love those books and the movies. Funny about 2 months ago my older sister was visiting and we were looking through Netflix and Amazone Prime movies for something good to watch and I discovered she'd never even heard of it.....so we watched the Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe and she loved it! You are so right, it IS magical.

That lamp post looks EXACTLY like the one in Narnia!

    Long live Aslan! ♥♥♥

  5. A nice post Sandi. I especially like your Petit Point china. I remember many years ago, seeing them in the department stores, like Eatons, Simpsons, The Bay etc. and envying them. They were always my favourite. We don't have those department stores any more. It's a good thing we have Thrift Shops. Have a nice week. Thelma xo

  8. Thank you for the adventurous tea, Sandi! My fourth grade teacher introduced me to the wonderful world of Narnia. I remember listening to her read the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe to the class. I've seen the movie adaptation, but never read the all the books in the series. I was fascinated with Turkish delights, but wasn't impressed when I tried it in real life!

Your new Petit Point china is the perfect Valentine gift. Your hubby knows you so well!

  9. Narnia references are common in our family. It's such an enchanting story that really grabs the imagination. My children (3) used to beg us to have another child, a boy, of course, to complete the two girls, two boys family so that they could get to Narnia.
    Lovely tea party.

  12. Oh Narnia! It is a beautiful place of wonder! My absolute favourite writing of all time! This is a delightful post and you've inspired me to make sure when I read Narnia to my children, we have a steaming hot pot of tea to go with it! We don't get snow here, but there are certain areas around where we live that are very much our 'Narnia'. We have two boys and two girls and I sometimes think of them as the Pevensies! Thanks for such a lovely post!

We have gotten a lot of snow too, but now it is raining and melting. Your tea setting is gorgeous as always, you make the most delightful desserts! Hugs to you today :)

  17. What a delightful post Sandi. I have seen The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe movie and enjoyed it immensely but haven't read the books. The Maritimes has certainly had it's share of winter weather the past couple of weeks but this mild spell this week is a nice reprieve. My late aunt had Petit Point as her china and I always loved the pattern with it's roses and cross stitch pattern. The desserts look amazing. I hope you are feeling better. Take care. Blessings, Pam

  18. A wonderful Narnian post! I too loved reading those books to my two kids. They loved the simple, but magical stories too. The movies brought everything to life, but I still enjoy the books more. That shot of the lamppost is perfect, as is the very snowy lane ... just like Mr. Tumnus' home. I have an old wardrobe of my dad's in my house and refer to it as the Narnia wardrobe. It's not as fancy, but it's very dark, aged wood ... just perfect ;)

  20. Dear Sandi, I really enjoyed in your post today. I imagine your beautiful Narnia and I drink cup of tea and eat proja (some popkorn salted cakes with cucumber and olives in Serbia) and I am blessed. Blessed to lucky that I find your beautiful blog and I really enjoyed to learn your post and watch your beautiful pictures. Sometimes I watch only pictures and I imagine a magic of creations. 26. Hi Sandi,

What an enchantingly entertaining post! I, for one (the only one, it seems!) have not read the Chronicles of Narnia, nor have I seen the Disney movies, so your snippets certainly have sparked my curiosity!

The Petit Point china is absolutely charming! Your teatime today, served with pretty sweets and peeks into whimsical stories makes for a most cozy escape.

Thanks for sharing and wishing you wonderful week,
    Poppy
