A Thankful Friday

Last night my son was in a car accident, but thanks be to God, he's alright....

Hubby and I had just gotten home from grocery shopping last night and our oldest son Jeff was at our house waiting for us. He had borrowed a truck from a friend and his father had promised to help him move a carpet into the basement of a house he and his wife are hoping to purchase.

There was a lot of black ice on the roads last night!
Hubby arrived home around 8:30 PM and we were watching a Christmas movie together when the phone rang at 10 PM. It was our DIL calling to tell us that Jeff had been in an accident and was enroute by ambulance to the hospital!
Jeff had returned the truck to his friend and was on the way home when the driver of the car in front of him had slammed on the brakes, and Jeff plowed into the back of him...
She needed for Hubby to go over and stay with the children while she went to the hospital in Summerside which is about a forty-five minute drive.

So I stayed at home with all sorts of morbid thoughts running through my head, and praying that Jeff would be alright! Hubby got home around 1 AM.
As it turned out, Jeff wasn't hurt, just a sore neck and whiplash, so they released him.
Their car is a write-off and he will miss work today.
He will no doubt be blamed for the accident because he ran into the back of the car. The law claims you must be in control of your vehicle at all times! So, his insurance will go up, he has lost his car, and he will lose a days pay because the company he works for doesn't supply benefits of any kind!
But at least he wasn't hurt or worse! For that, I am thankful!

The past two years have been very hard for my son and his wife. They have gone through many struggles and they didn't need this on top of everything else. But you know, I am so thankful that he wasn't hurt! My son may have lost his car, but it could have been much worse; he could have lost his life!
I don't know why the accident happened, but God protected Jeff last night and I know He will somehow turn this all into good!

So, yes, today, I have a thankful heart. My son is ok and everything will work out somehow. My dear Auntie who had a heart attack last week, is home and doing well.
I am thankful for many things today!

  1. Sandi,
I am praising GOD with you. I hope they realize how blessed he is, too. I do not say that flippantly. My youngest sister was killed in a car wreck at age 17. My heart breaks when I hear of any tragic death. That day forever changed my heart and life. I recognize the smallest blessing in the midst of the biggest and messiest disaster. I struggle in many areas of my life, but recognizes even the tiniest miracle is a gift GOD gave me on that day. He knew I would need to see the miracles to make it through the rest of my life.
    Blessings, hugs, and prayers,
    andrea

  2. God didn't create the accident. What happens as a result of the accident will be how your son, his wife and your family reacts to what happened.

This past summer I was hit in the rear end (bad) by someone who DIDN'T put on her brakes - just plowed right into me - a little old lady. Neither of us received a ticket because the officer who came to the scene just - well - didn't write one. So, if your son hasn't received his ticket by now, he may not ever get one.

As for his car being totaled, it depends on the state where you live how his insurance will deal with the loss.

We are faced with many situations during our lives that change the course of where we will go and how we will do it. Maybe several things need to be looked at by your son. Should he possibly seek employment that has benefits? Is it possible that if he doesn't have the skills for a job with benefits he should go back to school and gain a degree in a field he is interested in for a career? Could it be that the car he was driving at the time needed repairs and could have cost him his life eventually?

We always wonder what takes us to the events and places in our lives. Sometimes it is us. We steal, we get caught, we go to jail. Sometimes we have an angel on our shoulder directing our moments before a life-changing event. I imagine the people who just left the twin towers before 9/11 believe they were blessed.

Sit back, take a deep breath. Your son and his family have their health. A car is just a thing that can be replaced.

As long as life isn't lost, to me, it's all good.

  3. This is one of my biggest fears, car accidents. It seems this week every time we listen to the news there's been a fatal accident.

I am so glad to hear your son is not hurt.

    God bless,

    Hugs,
    Marsha

  4. I hope that even though this accident was unpleasant, that somehow there will be positive effects for your son and family. Thankfully, his injuries weren't life threatening.

  5. Oh wow! What a blessing indeed that he is ok! Sorry to hear they are going through such a difficult time. Car accidents are horrible I have been in 2 terrible ones. It is a miracle I am alive so I know what a blessing it is to walk away with your life even if you lose your car. I Will say a prayer for them. Losing a car will certainly be difficult on them. Glad to hear he is ok ~Blessings Heather

  9. I am so glad that your son is alright. I have a Jeff too, and he has had serious health problems all of his life, cancer, crohns disease, and he is just 34.
So, God bless your son and I hope that things go better for him.
And I pray for you too that your heart becomes lighter.

  10. Sandi, I am so happy that your son is alright...my daughter was hit from the rear and suffered whiplash that worsened in the days after the accident, so be watchful....that was ten years ago and she has to be very careful in all she does, or her neck goes out....as a Mother of four and busy, busy, I know she forgets her neck!!!
Prayers are wonderful and God IS good. All of this will turn around in time, but how can anyone be in control when someone slams on the brakes on a road with black ice????
Mimi gave wonderful advice...I know you are in Canada and your laws are different than ours....
    Hugs and prayers,
    Jil
Hubby has been watching the news and is quite aware of the road conditions where we are headed and all the accidents..many fatal. It may keep us from our trip...

  11. I am very glad he is okay. Since the other driver slammed on the brakes, then I think perhaps your son may not have to take the blame for the accident? Try to fight it a bit, anyway...People ought to know better than to slam on brakes on black ice, good grief, there is no time to react to a random manuever like that...
