Spiritual Sundays ~ Happy Mother's Day!

Hello everyone and welcome to my Spiritual Sundays post! Since this is Mother's Day weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to share a message about mothers.

This one is taken from "Our Daily Bread" and is penned by Bill Crowder.

"The Chester Beatty Library in Dublin, Ireland, houses a wonderful collection of ancient Bible fragments. One very small fragment is a portion of John 19. This piece of John's gospel describes the moment, as Jesus was being crucified, when He spoke to His mother in a display of love and concern for her. The words are from verse 26, where we read, "When Jesus saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, 'Woman, behold your son!' "

As I stared at that ancient fragment, it struck me afresh how tangible Jesus' love was for His mother and friend. How, with clear words, He let the world know of His love and affection by showing His concern that Mary be cared for by His friend John when He was gone. Hanging on the cross, Jesus said to John, " 'Behold your mother!' And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home " {v. 27}.

I think that today, on this Mother's Day, would be a wonderful time to declare publicly your love for your mom if you still have her - or to give thanks to the Lord for her if she is no longer with you. Then show in some tangible ways how much you love her and how much she has meant to you."

GOD BLESS MY MOTHER; ALL I AM OR HOPE TO BE I OWE TO HER. - Abraham Lincoln

Note: For those of you who didn't know, my cousin Cynthia's husband Jim passed away on Thursday of brain cancer. He had been ill about a year. Please pray for Cynthia as she grieves and carries on without him. They had no family.

  16. Hello Sandi

I will certainly pray for Cynthia. You are right, we have to show our mothers we love them. I know I owe a lot to my mother because she didn't just care for me for eighteen years. Being thirty, I know she will always be my mother. And from the time I was a couple months away from being twenty until I was twenty - four, she cared for me when my schizophrenia was at its worse. Check out my blog about living with schizophrenia. It's a spritiual journey.

    Your blog is awesome,
    Amanda

This is a beautiful post...thank youi for sharing the lovely reading and words.

I will keep your cousin in my thoughts. I hope she has the strength and the support she needs at a time like this.

I hope you are having a really good day and that your weather is lovely too.

We went to my mother's as I'd posted. I knew it was going to be "chilly" and there would be some rain. I wore capri pants and sandals as we have been doing for some time. We couldn't believe it when it started snowing during the visit and the whole drive home. I felt pretty strange wearing sandals thats for sure.

The snow stayed on the car windows until this morning...yuck.

  19. Hi Sandi, What a lovely post, it made me stop and reflect for a few moments this evening. I recently did a Mother's Day tribute for my mom that can be viewed here if you wish: http://flowershopgurl.blogspot.com/2010/05/they-say-we-choose-our-mothers.html
Thank you for visiting and leaving your sweet comments on my "Saturday Night Special" pansy and violet centerpiece design, it's my favorite. And thank you for commenting on my memory jar post from "Pink Saturday". I really enjoyed glitter all the starfish and shells in pink. So much fun!
I hope you had a wonderful day!

  21. Hello Sandi, Thank you for sharing Jesus' love and respect for His mother. That is a different aspect than I usually think of when I reflect on Him dying on the cross. May God bless all mothers and help them with that so very important task of raising Godly people.
My sympathy to you, your family and especially Cynthia at this difficult time.
Blessings and hugs and I'll be stopping by for tea - my permalink is http://foodasart-beth.blogspot.com/2010/05/afternoon-tea-for-two.html. As you know, I've posted a couple of posts since that one so maybe the permalink is a good idea. I'll leave it to your discretion and thank you for visiting me.
