No Place Like Home ~ What is A Homemaker?

Hello dear friends and welcome to another week of No Place Like Home!

Ever since I was a little girl, all I ever wanted to be was a homemaker and even though I have worn several hats, nothing has ever brought me the joy and contentment that staying home and being a mom and homemaker has brought me. You see, I thrive on bringing beauty and comfort into my home for my family and friends to enjoy.

I am a domestic diva and home is where my heart is.

Yes, I am one of those women who enjoys the scent of clothes fresh off the clothesline, baking special treats, and I like keeping house. Perhaps I'm a rare breed today.

I do know there are many ladies out there who work outside the home because they have to. Or perhaps they want to. I know my sister-in-law had her children and went back to work when they started school and she couldn't wait to get back to her job. Her children are two very fine, well-adjusted adults today and you couldn't find a closer family. So, whether you are a stay at home mom or a mom who works outside the home, I believe it all depends on the love and quality of care the children receive that matters. In any case, I salute you all because I know you're doing the best you can.

What is a homemaker, you may ask? Well, according to one dictionary, it describes a homemaker as a person, usually a woman, who cares for her own home and family by cleaning, cooking nutritious meals, doing laundry, running errands, caring for pets, etc... I am delighted to call myself a homemaker!

In the front of one of my recipe scribblers, I have penned the verse from Proverbs 31:27 -

"She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness."

It gives me great joy to see the smile of appreciation on the faces of the ones I love. Like baking an apple pie.

It's Hubby's favourite.

Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness. ~ Jane Austen

Now picture this...There is a nip in the air and the frost is beginning to paint lovely pictures on the windows but it's warm and cozy inside. A fire is dancing in the fireplace and cookies are fresh from the oven. Big mugs of hot chocolate are being savoured by those within.

Mom has made home a nice place to be.

When my children were growing up, I took great pains to do special things for my family. I loved having the smell of fresh baked cookies, cinnamon rolls, or spicy apple pie greet their noses when they came home from school and work. Actually, in my home, cinnamon rolls were always called "Snails." It was the name my oldest son put on them because they reminded him of snails. He was always the nature lover. *smiles*

My nesting instincts brought me joy. They still do.

Setting the table with my favourite china; Rose Chintz, a pattern I have loved since I was a little girl...

...makes me realize I am living my childhood dream of being a homemaker. Some believe that is a very high calling.

Homemaking is surely in reality the most important work in the world. ~ CS Lewis

When you think about it, where would we be without homemakers?

What does homemaking mean to you? Is it a joy or is it a drudgery because you're tired out from working all day? God bless you ladies!

Now I want to give each of you a chance to share what you are creating in your home to make it a delightful place for your loved ones to come home to. You are under no obligation to join my party but if you would like to, simply let me know in a comment and I will add your name to the list of participants.

You are welcome to share any of the following:

Cooking and baking, antiquing, artwork, ceramics,

crafts, collections, crocheting, knitting, quilting,

floral arranging, home decor, hospitality,

photography, tea time. That also means a visit to a

tearoom because I would love to hear about that

too. Thrift shopping, or perhaps you have a new

member of the family. Even fur babies are

welcome here.

You get the picture! Anything and everything which makes your home more enjoyable to come home to, for your family, your friends, and yourself.

There really is No Place Like Home. Thank you for visiting and have a lovely day.

Lord, this humble house we'd keep
Sweet with play and calm with sleep.
Help us so that we may give
Beauty to the lives we live.
Let Thy love and let Thy grace
Shine upon our dwelling place. -

  1. Your description of homemaking is so comforting. It is exactly as you say. It is the work of making home a happy place for the husband and children. I love all the work of cooking and baking and taking care of the family. It is a blessing to be home. This reminded me of a post I wrote a few years ago, "Gracious Homemaking" about our home life at that time. We had a grandbaby living with us and also my parents! There were a lot of people to take care of and it was such a privilege. I will share the link for the party:

Thank you for hosting. I love the tea pictures you shared. The apple pie and treats look wonderful!

  3. I am with you, Sandi. I think homemaking is a fine art and I love making things lovely and welcoming. There is not too much homemaking in young families these days. Many ittle kids go to day care early in the morning and come home in the late afternoon. It makes my heart sad but it is what it is. Any moment I can get my little grandchildren here, I do, and make everything warm and comfortable for them. They LOVE to come to Grammie's house. Your home and everything in it always look lovely. Thanks for your visit to Writing Straight from the Heart and for your comment, too. Susan

  4. I will be right over for one of your snails or a slice of apple pie! They look absolutely delish!! That is very cute of your son to have nicknamed cinnamon rolls snails. I love it.

So funny that you posted this subject today, as I am putting the final touches on an article about being an empty nest homemaker. I will provide the link when I finish and publish. Truly, I agree with you about the high calling of homemaking.

    Blessings,
    Patti

  6. Nice description of homemaking. I unfortunately was a single mother and worked during my children's upbringing. I did my best to give them a good home and upbringing. I am very proud of my children's accomplishments. My son is an electrical engineer and my daughter is a CFO for a high teck company in Montreal. She also attended Harvard Business College in Boston for "Woman In Leadership". She has appeared on French T.V. giving talks on business and has done other great things.
Thanks for hosting. This week you could share my cooking blog. Thel's Kitchen at https://thelmaday.blogspot.com/2019/11/blueberry-and-pear-crisp.html

  7. My mom always joked that my brother inherited her cooking skills, while I got her cleaning habit (my culinary skills leave much to be desired. HA!).

You introduced me to the beautiful Rose Chintz pattern.

I forgot to participate in last week's party. Whoops! Please include me this week: https://teainthevalley.blogspot.com/2019/11/cozy-chais.html

  8. I so enjoyed this post, Sandi. You are so right. Homemaking is indeed a very high calling.

I was recently reading a friend's post on Instagram -- she is a pastor's wife, an excellent Bible teacher of women, and a lady who is a wonderful homemaker, homeschool teacher, mother and grandmother. Sometimes she will post about a craft or art project, or something she is cooking or baking. I didn't realize this before, but often when she posts about one of these homey topics that add so much grace to life, she gets rude comments from people who tell her she's showing off, etc. Apparently there is some sort of movement afoot to remove much of the beauty and color from home life. To me, this is so wrong. I believe that when we bring beauty and order to our homes, and use our creativity in caring for our homes and families, we are bringing glory to God, who gave us these gifts to use in serving Him.

I pondered over what to link up for today -- I had been planning on another Christmas post, but in view of what you have shared I decided to link to a rather practical post on how and why I plan menus. I hope it is a help to someone. http://acrossmytable.blogspot.com/2018/08/how-and-why-i-menu-plan.html

  10. I love being a homemaker, too, Sandi. Caring for a home and trying to make it cozy and comfortable is important to me. I sure would love a slice of your apple pie! Your hubby is a lucky man. You are more than welcome to add my post to your blog. Thank you for having this party for us.

  11. Oh Sandi, I absolutely love this post. You have said/written exactly what so many need to hear. As Mrs.T wrote, God gave us these gifts and abilities to show our love, and share His blessings, to family and friends. Even though now I'm a lot older, still in the "workplace" (part time), and live alone, homemaking and making my "nest" continually give me joy. I think Laura Ingalls Wilder said..."Home is the nicest word there is..."

  13. What a lovely post, Sandi. I loved being a stay-at-home mom when my kids were home and was lucky that I had the best of both worlds as I was able to work from home when they were at school. I love everything about homemaking (except maybe scrubbing floors on my hands and knees)...lol
I used to lay out stones to make rooms in houses when I played as a child- guess I knew I would be in the housing industry even way back then. xo Diana
