Life is a gift! Today, and every day you wake up, is a gift from God. Remember to thank Him for it.
Hello everyone ! I hope all my Canadian friends had a lovely and bountiful Thanksgiving!
Monday was turkey day in Canada. Roast turkey, potatoes and gravy, stuffing and cranberry sauce, and of course pumpkin pie with real whipped cream; what a feast!
A few shots of Hubby's cousin's Thanksgiving table. She goes all out to set her table.
I don't know about you, but I love turkey leftovers! I have any number of delicious recipes I can use the turkey in so I find it very economical. I like to make turkey pot pie, hot turkey sandwiches, "turkey" a la king, soup, casserole, turkey stir-fry, etc...What do you do with your leftovers? Do you even like leftovers?
Today it will be a quick cuppa tea and a piece of pumpkin pie. The cup and saucer are Skye McGhie called Pierced Lace.
The plate is part of a set of four my son gave me for Christmas two years ago. It is the under plate to a set of pumpkin soup bowls from Sur la Table and he got them in Colorado when he lived there.
The lovely table topper underneath it all was part of a give away win from Bernideen several years ago. I bring it out every October.
Question for you! I have my father's violin. When my middle son was a teenager and in band at school, my father gave him his violin. When my son graduated and left for the west coast to go to bible college, he left the violin here with me. I removed the strings and the bow is inside its case. I've had this violin hanging in the family room for years so no one really sees it. Now, what I'm about to tell you may horrify some of you!
I have been wanting to paint it white and distress it for years and my son would never give me permission to do that.
Well, seems he's had a change of heart especially since his nephew, my grandson, said I should paint it! My son feels it would be even more special to have Mom's stamp on it. So, now that I have my son's permission, I'm re-thinking whether I should or not. What do you think? Would you paint it or do you think it would be best to leave it as is?
NOTE: I have decided to NOT paint the violin. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that painting it would alter it in every way. I wish to keep the integrity of it intact. Thank you everyone for commenting.
Some of you may remember this prayer that I used at the end of my HOME and No Place Like Home parties.
"Lord, this humble house we'd keep
Sweet with play and calm with sleep.
Help us so that we may give
Beauty to the lives we live.
Let Thy bounty and Thy grace
Shine upon our dwelling place." ~ Edgar A. Guest
God bless you all and remember to be thankful every day.

Dear Sandi:
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I remember that topper! Glad you are still enjoying. Your table is lovely. I just ate pumpkin pie too so I need to go finish my walk. It was raining this morning so I walked 40 min with an umbrella but now I could finish better! That Thanksgiving table is amazing! Lovely posting today as always!
I loved your first prayer that wrote about thanking God...so pretty. Your cousin's table looks so festive and wonderful for Thanksgiving, Sandi! I would love a slice of your pumpkin pie with whipped cream, please. I think you should do whatever makes you happy on whether to paint the violin or not. Thank you for your ending prayer, also. Happy Belated Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI really hope you'll reconsider painting the violin. The wood is so beautiful and since it is a family piece, I would leave it in original condition. It would certainly lower the value. That may not be a concern with you since it's probably more of a sentimental piece, but future generations may wish you hadn't done it!
ReplyDeleteVictorian Girl, I think you're probably right! It is a family piece and it may be best to leave it the way it is. Thank you for commenting.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the Thanksgiving table setting. It is a work of art! I wouldn't paint the violin. Natural is always my first choice, altho' I have seen many painted things that I like. But to me that is a last resort if the surface is beyond saving.
ReplyDeleteYour hubby's cousin's Thanksgiving table looks fantastic. Do any of your kids or grandkids intend to play the violin? If so, painting it may alter the sound...
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving. My children all took violin lessons growing up. Only my daughter still plays. If it were me, I would not paint the violin. They are expensive instruments, and one day one of your grandchildren might like to learn. It would be so special to have the violin that was your fathers. A family heirloom to be passed down.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I love the Thanksgiving table decorations...so lovely and festive. So much to be thankful for, yes? The violin...I personally would not paint it. It is a classic piece as well as a family heirloom...and to me, a violin ought to look like a violin...that's just my personal opinion. My mother took violin lessons and tried to hard to become a violinist, but just never really excelled at it. Her violin was given to one of my great-nieces. I don't know if she has ever played it, but I believe she treasures it as a gift from her great-grandmother. Enjoy the violin as it is...a treasure from your father, and someday your son will want it again I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteWonderful tablescape!Happy Thanksgiving!I would not paint the violin...Hugs!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautifully and lovingly set Thanksgiving table! I loved the Pilgrim man and woman figurines, just added the perfect touch to the table! I love turkey leftovers, like you, and look forward to using them up after Thanksgiving. I see you've made a decision about the violin, I am agreeing with everyone else to keep it vintage as it is, it is such a beautiful sentimental piece. It would be lovely if one of your grandchildren decided to learn to play it! Have a lovely week :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Thanksgiving! I've only recently begun to follow you and haven't commented, yet, from shyness-- this post, however, has moved me to share my thoughts.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, that Pierced Lace saucer is so pretty and perfect placed on the tablecloth(I notice you use the word "table topper" instead, and that's the first time I've seen that. Might have to Google this, haha).
As for the violin... Great choice! An heirloom has to be cherished, especially because so few people even get to have family heirlooms. Your father's violin is in perfect condition and it is wonderful you have it at home with you.
Beautiful photos, as always.
Thank you, Pilar. A table topper is smaller than a tablecloth but adds a lovely touch to your table when not using the big cloth. Yes, I am happy to have my father's violin and I will it keep for my son until he wants it. Thank you for your visit. Blessings...Sandi
DeleteWhat a beautiful Thanksgiving table! I am glad you decided to not paint the violin. I am a 'don't worry, paint it!" kind of person, but I believe when an item is special to the family, it's important to leave it as is. But I'd look for an old one with no sentimental value and paint it! It would look great!
ReplyDeleteLoved your prayers in this post. Your Thanksgiving looks and sounds wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you decided against painting the violin.
Happy Fall ~ FlowerLady
So glad you had a great Thanksgiving dear lady . Sounds like a wonderful feast . Yum . Love the tablescape . So pretty . Oh i love it that you have that wonderful heirloom, violin . How precious . I’m glad you didn’t paint it . Hugs and blessings, Cindy
ReplyDeleteSandi, I'm so relieved that you decided against painting it! It's not just a decorative object, it's a musical instrument that would be changed forever by painting. I'm sure the tone would be ruined. Would love a piece of your pie on that gorgeous plate and cup of tea in that beautiful Pierced Lace. That table is a work of art! My favorite thing to do with turkey leftovers is to make a cold turkey sandwich on good white bread with mayonnaise, cranberry sauce and dressing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful table! Happy Thanksgiving! I, too, think not painting the violin is a good decision. And I LOVE that prayer. Blessings to you and yours.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joy.
DeleteHi Sandi,
ReplyDeleteI am no longer blogging at all (even removed my blog), but your beautiful blog is an inspiring balm to my soul, so I still want to pop by to visit you. I thought of you last week---my daughter and son-in-law are on vacation in Canada (Victoria). They mentioned that it was Canadian Thanksgiving, and that made me think of my Canadian blog friends. The table does, indeed, look lovely!
I don't really enjoy turkey, so my favorite part of Thanksgiving is all the sides--- especially stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, corn pudding. (Carb overload!)
I'm glad you decided to not paint the violin. It is beautiful just the way it is, and while I'm sure it would be equally beautiful painted and distressed, I think it would be a shame to change what is already so gorgeous.
Blessings to you, sweet friend.
Love,
Patti
Thank you for visiting, Patti. I hope your daughter and her husband enjoy visiting Victoria. I have never been there myself although the last time we were out visiting my son in Vancouver, he wanted to take us over to the island but we ran out of time. Thank for your nice comment and take care. Blessings...Sandi
